Weston Hall Afternoon Tea

Well if you haven’t guessed I do enjoy an afternoon tea even though I don’t have a sweet tooth.  For my last birthday my lovely friend Fordy got me two vouchers for afternoon tea at Weston Hall, Stafford.  Having a browse on line beforehand this looked like a marvellous setting.
We arrived at this lovely building which was very picturesque the only down side was that it was quite close to a main road and this spoiled the view a bit but the noise levels weren’t too bad.  We headed into the Cellar restaurant where our afternoon tea was booked and showed into the lounge area where we would be having it.  Mr Bus and I chose some lovely sofas to sit on next to the fire, although it was the end of May we went the weather was still cold and wet so this was welcome.
For our afternoon tea we could choose from a range of teas or coffee and we opted for Assam, being one of our favourites.  We were expecting to wait a little while and started to have a nose at what else they had on offer.  One thing that caught our eye was the Gentleman’safternoon tea which we will have to return to sample, this included more savoury items much to my joy being burgers and pork scratching mmmm, my mouth is watering now just thinking about it.

Our afternoon tea turned up and it looked gorgeous, the taste didn’t let it down either it was splendid.  We had a selection of sandwiches, cakes which were a fruit cake, a mini lemon meringue pie, bakewell slice and a big wedge of the lightest Victoria sponge in the world.  There was also one fruit and one plain scone each.

Now with most afternoon teas I find them too much to eat and too sweet.  I have found a way of combating the sweetness with alternating a bit of cake and then a finger sandwich, this worked very well.  I still couldn’t eat it all and we ended up taking a doggy bag home with us.

Overall I would have to say this is one of the best afternoon teas I have had, the setting was brilliant, the service was brilliant and the food was gorgeous.  We will definitely be returning not only for a gentleman’s afternoon tea but some meals as well.

VW Bus Birthday Cake

It’s that time of year again the fantastic Mr Bus’ birthday.   Now last year I decided to design and make him a digger cake, this year of course I had to equal that effort or go one better.   I had a few ideas in the pipeline and decided to ask the Birthday boy what he would prefer.   We went with a VW Bus cake. Now I started with baking a lemon drizzle loaf cake, whilst this was cooling had the daunting thought this was not going to be high enough, so baked another lemon loaf cake, this time without the drizzle, so that I could square off the top to sit the other one on top of it.   After these had cooled down, it was time to build, placing the loaf cakes one on top of the other with a layer of vanilla butter cream in the middle, I covered the cakes all over in butter cream.   I then set about with the icing.   I thought it best to start with the white top and draped it over the cakes, just leaving enough for a slight overlap at the bottom. ...

Like to Graze?

Well, I have started to try and be healthier, mainly with making my portions smaller and doing some exercise. I now try and go for a run once a week (to start with) and my sister and I now attend Aquafit every Thursday. The other evening when I went to one of my fantastic friend’s house I noticed these delicious looking healthy snacks on her table, brimming with flavour and healthy goodness. I just had to ask her about them. They come from a company called Graze, which is online. You can order boxes from them (a snack box or a nutrition box) which will be delivered straight to you either weekly or every other week, for a small cost (cheaper than buying it all from a supermarket for sure). The box is small enough to fit through your letter box as well, so you don’t have to worry if you’re in or not. Also you can tell them when you’re going to be on holiday so they won’t send you a box during that time. These boxes are filled to the brim with goodness, and contain things like nuts,...

Pumpkin and Butternut Squash Pie

I love the autumn and the seasonal vegetables it brings.  One of my favourites being pumpkin.  Well in a nod to this here is my really simple pumpkin and butternut squash pie. 2 bags of pre cut pumpkin and butternut squash (why sweat over cutting them up when Tesco do them in a bag £1 each and 3 for 2) garlic goats cheese spinach filo pastry olive oil salt and pepper to season Steam cook the pumpkin and Butternut squash as directed on the packet.  In a pie dish layer the bottom with spinach, add chunks of goats cheese (as much or little as you like), then add one layer of the pumpkin and butternut squash and some garlic, season. Repeat this for the second layer - spinach, goats cheese, pumpkin and butternut squash, garlic and season. With the filo pastry, for goodness sake buy this, even Mary Berry admitted to doing this!!!  Take a sheet at a time brush each side with olive oil and scrunch up by pinching from the centre and add to the top of the pi...
